Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?
The origin of Laser Hair Removal
Since 1997, laser hair removal has been approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction, although some people may require a few touch-up treatments when large areas of unwanted hair are involved. The principle behind the efficacy of laser hair removal is called selective photothermolysis, or the precise targeting of hair follicles using specific light wavelengths that are absorbed by melanin in the hair follice.
A chemical promoting hair growth and giving color to skin and hair, melanin readily heats up under laser energy and effectively destroys the follicle. However, since hair growth consists of three phases--the anagen, telogen and catagen--laser hair removal sessions must be done when follicles are actively growing hair during the anagen phase. Consequently, it typically takes several sessions at our Wilmington Laser Hair Removal and Skin Clinic to eliminate hair in all growth phases.
Laser Hair Removal is Safe and Effective
Only licensed laser practitioners should perform laser hair removal procedures because of the technology involved in applying the right amount of laser energy to hair follicles. Side effects are rarely experienced--some itching and redness that disappears within two or three days of treatment. Pain is minimal and described by people who undergo laser hair removal as feeling like a rubber band snapping against their skin. While special numbing creams are available, most Wilmington Laser Hair Removal and Skin Clinic clients do not need or use them.
Why Laser Hair Removal?
In addition to providing long-term removal of excess hair, many people prefer laser hair removal over the hassle of shaving and tweezing every day or from dealing with ingrown hairs. Due to cutting, shaving or breaking off, ingrown hairs become trapped inside follicles. Unable to emerge from the follicle, the hair is forced to bend inward, eventually drilling into the skin and causing irritation. The inflammation that follows promotes accumulation of dirt, sebaceous oil and dead skin cells that obstruct the follicle, sometimes resulting in acne eruptions and visible skin lesions.
