Choosing the Best Sunscreen

We all know we need to be pro-active in protecting our skin from the harmful rays of the sun but so many of us are DOING IT WRONG.  There is a lot of mis-information and poor product labeling out there that can put you and your skin at risk. In this post, we'll talk about what to look for in selecting a sunscreen. All products mentioned in this post are available for purchase at the Wilmington Laser Hair Removal & Skin Clinic at 700 Military Cutoff Road, Unit 1B. Stop in and see us!

What to look for in selecting a Sunscreen

1. Labeled "broad-spectrum sunscreen" which means it blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Has an SPF rating of 15-50

  • But people who have very fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, or conditions like lupus that increase sensitivity to sunlight should consider SPF 30 or higher.
  • Any product with an SPF lower than 15 will not protect against skin cancer and SPF over 50 has not been proven do provide any additional protection.

3. Has UVA protection

  • There is no rating to tell you how good a sunscreen is at blocking UVA rays. So when it comes to UVA protection, look for a sunscreen that contains at least one of the following ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone, or zinc oxide.

4. Is fragrance-free

  • Scents bring more unnecessary chemicals and potential allergens to the mix.

5. Avoid products with vitamin A, retinol or its derivatives, such as retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate.

6. Don't rely on the SPF in your makeup as sunscreen

  • SPF in make-up is not enough as the makeup does not provide enough coverage. You would need seven times the normal amount of foundation and 14 times the normal amount of powder to get the sun protection factor on the label.

7. Water and sweat resistance.

  • Whether you're exercising, swimming, or shopping outdoors where you are sweating you wan to choose sunscreen resistant to water and sweat.
  •  The FDA defines "water resistant" sunscreen as meaning that the SPF level stays effective after 40 minutes in the water. "Very water resistant" means it holds after 80 minutes of swimming. These sunscreens are in no way water-proof, so you'll need to reapply them regularly.
