Dummy-Proof Ways to Protect Your Skin from Winter Dryness

Summer humidity may be a nuisance, but it’s great for your skin. As the weather turns cooler and dryer we begin the chore of keeping skin soft and warding off that dry, flaky feeling.

At Wilmington Laser Hair Removal and Skin Clinic we are always looking for ways to hydrate winter skin. If yours is already feeling dry, here are some DIY home remedies to relieve it.

And try these ideas:

Use a humidifier to keep indoor air moist.

Even a drugstore vaporizer can add a lot of water to the air. Don’t crank up the furnace to keep warm. Instead, wear layers of loose clothing. Sweaters and socks are part of the fun of winter anyway. But avoid direct contact with wool; many people are allergic or sensitive to wool and lanolin. Wear a cotton layer under your wool garments.

Cover your skin outdoors.

When you go out in the Wilmington wind, cover your skin. A hoodie helps cover the sides of your face, or wrap a scarf over your lower face. Wear gloves to keep your hand from chapping.

Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine which have a diuretic effect, draining much-needed moisture from your body. If you can’t resist the temptation, add fluids to make up the difference.

Don’t overheat bath water.

It’s tempting to soak in a hot tub when you’re chilly, but resist. All that hot water will dry your skin. A brief warm show is much kinder to your dry skin than a long hot bath.

Avoid drying soaps.

Choose skin cleansers that are more moisturizing than soap. Look for replenishing ingredients such as jojoba oil and shea butter (which has the benefit of smelling like the beach). Apply moisturizer morning, noon and night to any dry areas. If your skin is irritated, try a different moisturizer.

Apply moisturizer immediately after your shower.

You can even do it before you dry off—apply oil to wet skin, then pat dry to seal in the hydrating water.
