5 Steps to Perfect Eyebrows
Great brows are like the day after a night of amazing sex: Nobody knows what you did...but they notice you look incredible!
Perfectly designed and groomed eyebrows balance your features and frame your eyes helping you look you best. Follow these 5 steps and achieve YOUR prefect brows.
1. Pay Attention to Face Shape
While you may thing Kim K’s severe angles would look great on you, it’s important that you consider your own unique bone structure and brow growth pattern. Giving extreme arches to a naturally round brow line could make you look clownish and silly. Additionally, if you have a delicate features and smaller face size, thicker brows can look unnatural and severe. For those with more prominent features, they need a thicker brow to help the face look more proportional.
Long Face
To balance the length of your face, avoid arches and stick to thick, straight-arched brows.
Short Face
You have the opposite problem of a long face, so lengthen with thin brows that have higher arches.
Round Face
To slim the middle region of your face, keep your brows medium-thick with an arched brow. “The trick here is to keep the brow ends long,” says Anastasia. “The longer brow creates a triangular symmetry between your brows and chin that gives the illusion of a heart shape.”
Oval Face
To widen an oval face, keep your brows shorter to create the appearance of larger cheeks.
Heart-shaped Face
This face shape can hold most brow styles except for straight brows.
Square Face
Soften an angular face with naturally-shaped brows. Avoid dramatic arches or overly flat brows that can enhance a strong jawline.
2. Abide by the "Golden Ratio"
The Golden Ratio technique uses the eyebrows as the starting point for beauty. Properly proportioned eyebrows frame the entire face, and help bring balance and symmetry to all of your features.
Flip your tweezer or an eye pencil upside down so the open end is pointing downward, and place it vertically alongside the outer edge of the bottom of your nostril. The point where the vertex lands marks the beginning of your brow (which should also be about one inch above the inner corner of your eye). Using an eye pencil, draw a vertical line to demarcate the start of each brow, then check that the space above the bridge of your nose is centered between them. Remove the strays that fall in between.
3. Don’t Over Pluck
One of the worst things you can do to your eyebrows is pluck too much or too often. Stick to plucking only stray out-of-bounds hairs, such as under your natural arch or towards the center. Some make-up artists suggest drawing an outline with a white eye pencil to create a stencil around which to pluck.
4. Fill Em’ In
In order to finish the look, lightly fill in your brows with an eyebrow pencil or an angled brush dipped into powder eyebrow filler. The real trick, however, is choosing the right color. For the most natural look, brunettes should stick to one shade lighter than their hair color while blondes should choose one shade darker. Redheads should select a sable brown while women going gray should choose a soft taupe.
5. Trial and Error
Above all, keep in mind that getting the right look can take a little trial and error. Don’t be afraid to try out different shades and products to achieve the look you desire. When all else fails, trust the experts!
