5 Skincare Myths BUSTED
Maybe you heard it from your mom, your sister, or your best friend. We've all heard some of these skincare myths before and they are simply not true. Check out these 5 skincare myths we've BUSTED.
Myth #1: The Best Way to Control Oily Skin is to Remove all the Oil
Your body knows what it needs, and your skin needs some oil to keep it moisturized and protected. If you're trying to control your oily skin by scrubbing your face until it's tight and completely free of oil, you could actually be making your skin oilier. When the protective layer of oil is removed, your oil glands go into overdrive, producing even more oil than usual in order to make up for what's been lost. Instead of stripping the face, aim to balance your skin with a gentle cleanser followed by a topical salicylic acid product to help clear out the pores and regulate oil production. Make sure to follow the salicylic acid with an oil free moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and balanced, but not oily.
Myth #2: If Your Tinted moisturizer of Foundation has SPF, You Don't Need to use a Sunscreen
No matter how high the SPF is in your foundation or tinted moisturizer, you should always use a separate SPF product. The problem isn't the quality of sun protection in makeup, but rather the quantity. In order to get the full sun protection factor from an SPF product, you need to use 2ml for every square foot of skin, or a nickel sized dollop for the face alone (2Tbs for the face and body total.) There's little chance that you're applying your makeup in such heavy layers, so for true protection, use a separate sun protection product under makeup.
Myth #3: If You Can't Pronounce the Ingredient Name, You Shouldn't use it on Your Skin
This rule may be a grocery shopping staple, but it could cause you to eliminate highly beneficial products from your skin care routine. Glycolic acid, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, and niacinamide are all highly beneficial ingredients that also double as tongue twisters. It's not about pronunciation, but researching what's right right for your skin. Dull skin? Try exfoliating with glycolic acid. Acne and inflammation? Try increasing circulation with niacinamide. Dryness and irritation? Try the smoothing and soothing benefits of dipotassium glycyrrhizate.
Myth #4: The Higher the SPF, the Longer You can Stay in the Sun
SPF does not indicate the duration of sun protection offered by a product, but the quality of protection. So, pick an SPF with 30 or more broad spectrum protection, and remember to reapply at least every 2 hours.
Myth #5: You Don't Have to Wash Your Face in the Morning Because You Haven't Worn any Makeup
You may not have to remove makeup in the morning, but you should still be washing your face when you wake up. The key to the morning cleanse is to gently remove the dirt, oil, and other impurities that your skin picked up during the night from your pillow, hair, hands, and bedding. Use a gentle non-foaming cleanser and lukewarm water to cleanse and refresh your skin, and be sure to follow with moisturizer and SPF.
